Selank

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, in which tuftsin, a tetrapeptide fragment of the immunoglobulin G heavy chain, is extended by a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro; investigators at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Moscow, have characterised its allosteric modulation of [3H]GABA binding in radioligand assays (Vyunova et al., Protein and Peptide Letters 2018). Earlier work measured enkephalin half-life and enkephalinase activity in blood from patients with anxiety disorders and the peptide's inhibition of plasma enkephalin hydrolysis in vitro (Zozulya et al., Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine 2001), and cell-culture work profiled GABAergic neurotransmission gene expression in IMR-32 neuroblastoma cells (Filatova et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology 2017). Selank is a registered pharmaceutical in the Russian Federation in other formulations, with small Russian-language patient studies (Zozulia et al., Zhurnal Nevrologii i Psikhiatrii imeni S.S. Korsakova 2008); it holds no FDA or EMA approval, and the research material is not a pharmaceutical product.
