Epithalon
Epithalon (epitalon, AEDG) is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, designed at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology on the basis of the amino-acid composition of epithalamin, a bovine pineal gland extract (Araj et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2025). The published literature originates largely from that institute and its collaborators and rests on cell-culture and rodent work. Investigators examined telomerase catalytic-subunit expression, telomerase enzymatic activity and telomere length in telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblast cultures (Khavinson et al., Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine 2003), and gene expression and protein synthesis endpoints in a human mesenchymal stem cell model of neurogenesis (Khavinson et al., Molecules 2020). Rodent work recorded lifespan, estrous function, bone-marrow chromosome aberrations and spontaneous tumour incidence in female Swiss-derived SHR mice (Anisimov et al., Biogerontology 2003). Human data remain minimal.
