DSIP
DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide, INN emideltide) is a synthetic nonapeptide, Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu, originally isolated from rabbit cerebral venous blood. The sequence was confirmed by synthesis, with delta and spindle electroencephalographic endpoints examined in rabbits (Schoenenberger & Monnier, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA 1977). Reviews catalogue rodent, rabbit, cat and human electroencephalographic, neuroendocrine and locomotor endpoints (Graf & Kastin, Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews 1984), and a later review regards the DSIP-sleep link as unresolved (Kovalzon & Strekalova, Journal of Neurochemistry 2006). Published human data are sparse, resting on small studies of the early 1980s that recorded sleep parameters in healthy volunteers (Schneider-Helmert et al., International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Therapy and Toxicology 1981) and in patients with chronic insomnia (Schneider-Helmert & Schoenenberger, Experientia 1981). A DSIP preparation, Deltaran, is described in Russian literature; the peptide is not an approved pharmaceutical product in the United States or European Union.
