NAD+

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme found in all living cells, where it acts as an electron carrier in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes including sirtuins and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases. Published literature, largely from rodent models, has described declines in tissue NAD+ concentrations with age and has examined precursors such as nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide as experimental means of raising NAD+ (Rajman et al., Cell Metab 2018). In humans, a randomised placebo-controlled crossover study examined the tolerability of oral nicotinamide riboside and measured blood NAD+ concentrations in healthy middle-aged and older adults (Martens et al., Nat Commun 2018).
